Helen R. Kanovsky was Senior Vice President and General Counsel at the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), where she would oversee the association’s internal legal affairs, compliance and human resources operations. Prior to joining MBA, Helen was the longest-serving General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and also served as an Acting Deputy Secretary in 2014. Previously, she served as General Counsel and Chief Operating Officer at the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, and as General Counsel at both GE Capital Management and Skyline Financial Services. Additionally, Ms. Kanovsky worked in private practice and on Capitol Hill, where she served as Chief of Staff to then-Senator John Kerry.
Ms. Kanovsky is a member of the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association and the Washington, D.C. Bar Association. She joined the HIT Board of Trustees in 2018 and serves as Chair.
She graduated cum laude with a law degree from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree from Cornell University.
