Building America CDE, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, works to revitalize low-income communities and create needed jobs, including union construction jobs, by facilitating investments in commercial development, affordable housing, and healthcare facilities. Certified as a community development entity (CDE), Building America makes use of New Markets Tax Credits (NMTCs) to attract equity investors for these high-impact development projects.
Tax credits provided by Building America are making a difference to residents of economically depressed communities by closing financing gaps that would otherwise prevent needed union-built projects from going forward. When appropriate, the HIT may provide debt financing for projects that receive NMTCs through Building America.
The HIT and Building America have a shared vision of community revitalization and possess the technical expertise to bring complex projects to reality. Building America’s work builds on the efforts of the American labor movement to improve the quality of life for people with limited economic means.
