Emily E. Johnstone Executive Vice President/Managing Director of Defined Contribution Marketing

Emily E. Johnstone is the Executive Vice President/Managing Director of Defined Contribution Marketing for the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust. Based at the HIT’s San Francisco office, she handles relations with HIT investors and developers, primarily in the Western region. She also leads the marketing team’s national efforts to develop and execute a strategy for seeking investments into the HIT Daily Valued Fund (HIT-DVF). The HIT-DVF is a core fixed-income collective investment fund launched in 2016 by Hand Benefits & Trust, which enables participants in union 401(k) and other defined contribution plans to invest in the HIT.

Ms. Johnstone has over 20 years of housing finance and marketing experience, with a focus on the San Francisco area. She came to the HIT in 2011 from RBC Capital Markets. While working with RBC’s Tax Credit Equity Group, she served as Director of Investor Relations and Director of the group’s West Regional Office. She also chaired the RBC Socially Responsible Investment Working Group. Before joining RBC in 2006, Ms. Johnstone spent four years with AEGON Community Investments in San Francisco, where she worked with developers nationwide to finance affordable housing. She had worked for the HIT earlier in its San Francisco office as an investment officer from 1998 to 2001.

Ms. Johnstone holds a BA/MA in economics from the University of Chicago. She was a Board Member of the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition in Washington, DC, from 2008 through 2010. She is a co-founder of Emerge, a political training program for women.
